The Legend Behind the

BARN OF DOOM

1901-2024

The barn that stands today was built in 1911 after the original barn burnt in 1901. The original barn was built by the Whitfields, a generational farming family who had settled in Manitoba during the 1800s. Disturbingly, the reason behind the fire is credited to horrors experienced within the barn; a child’s murder, a father’s suicide, and a mother’s sacrifice. The story begins with the murder and disappearance of the Whitfield children.

It is said that the Whitfield children would run through the back pasture playing hide and seek during the summer months. However, one evening the children did not return on time for supper. Their mother had thought they had gotten lost in the back pasture and had sent her husband, the farmer, out to find them.

The body of the son was found by the farmer, butchered and hanging within the rafters of the barn. After the discovery of their mutilated son, a search party with over a hundred men was organized by the church to find the Whitfield family’s daughter. She was never found. It has been suggested that an escaped inmate from the Stony Mountain Penitentiary was behind the attack, but this has not been confirmed.

Three days after their son’s death, life around the farm began to wither. First, the barn cats began to disappear, then the cattle, horses, and any animal that spent a night in the barn would mysteriously fall ill and quickly die. These deaths and the eventual failure of the crops sent the farmer into madness. With the death of his children, the farmer eventually killed himself inside the barn at the end of harvest.

The method has never been confirmed, only the location.

Exactly one year after the death and disappearance of her family, the farmer’s wife held a ritual with a woman exiled from their church to bring her family back from the dead. It is not known if the ritual was completed, as that night the barn caught fire with the farmer’s wife trapped inside.

However, the voices that can be heard today tell us that the veil between our world and the spirit world had been cracked open that night.

Today, the Whitfield children have been spotted by staff playing in our parking lot and running through the barn during the summer as staff design and set up new scenes. Some staff have quit on the spot after seeing the face of the farmer; his mouth stretched open as if he were screaming in pain, except he stands frozen without a sound. But the most common sighting is that of a man’s shadow, perhaps the farmer himself or the aura of death that the wife had called to.

We at Six Pines believe that the veil between two worlds had indeed been cracked open in 1901, and the darkness that lurks beyond has taken residence underneath where the Barn of Doom stands.

If you’re brave enough to visit the Barn of Doom, you might just find yourself playing a deadly game with forces beyond your wildest imagination…
